Canada has lost its measles elimination status after nearly three decades, failing to contain an outbreak that has persisted for over a year.

Last month, health experts had predicted that the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) would revoke this status from Canada. The country has recorded over 5,000 cases of measles across nine out of ten provinces and one northern territory.

“Although recent transmission has slowed, this outbreak has persisted for more than 12 months, particularly in communities with low vaccination coverage,” Canada’s public health agency said in a statement.

The agency further added, “PAHO informed the Public Health Agency of Canada that Canada no longer holds measles elimination status,” and stated that the agency will now focus on improving vaccination coverage, strengthening data sharing, and enhancing overall surveillance efforts.

Health experts suggest that declining vaccination rates in some parts of the country indicate that other vaccine-preventable diseases could re-emerge in a population increasingly skeptical of vaccines following the COVID-19 pandemic.
