The Emergency Department (ER) at Mission Memorial Hospital was temporarily closed overnight from Sunday into Monday morning due to a staffing shortage, according to Fraser Health.

The health authority stated in a release on Sunday that the ER would be closed to new patients from 5:00 PM on November 9 until 8:00 AM on November 10. This earlier closure time was set to ensure all patients already present in the department could be seen before the doctors’ shift ended at 11:00 PM.

Fraser Health noted that during the closure, emergency-trained nurses would remain on-site. They would provide initial care to walk-in patients and could arrange for the transfer of patients with urgent needs to nearby hospitals.

The hospital’s Emergency Department has faced several overnight closures this year due to medical staffing challenges, including the nights of October 31–November 1, August 3–4, March 29–30 and 30–31, and February 15–16.

Fraser Health attributes this disruption to an ongoing shortage of physicians, a problem that has caused temporary closures in emergency rooms in other parts of the province as well. Delta has also experienced four overnight closures of its hospital’s Emergency Department this year, leading one City Councillor to label the situation a “public health emergency.”
