A massive explosion ripped through a parked car near Gate No. 1 of the historic Red Fort in New Delhi this evening, resulting in a confirmed death toll of eight people and leaving at least 12 injured.
The Lok Nayak Hospital (LNJP) in Delhi confirmed that a total of eight people were brought to the facility deceased from the blast site. Several other injured individuals are reportedly being treated at other hospitals near the Red Fort area.
Police and Bomb Disposal Squads immediately rushed to the scene. Authorities have initiated an investigation, with officials currently suspecting the cause to be either a CNG cylinder explosion or a low-intensity IED.
The entire Red Fort area has been sealed off, and a high alert has been declared across Delhi as forensic teams work to collect evidence from the blast site.
In a related development, two men have been detained following the explosion. Police identified the men as Salman and Devender, both of whom are previous owners of the exploded Hyundai i20 car.
Investigators stated that they are tracing the car’s detailed sales history to uncover further clues. So far, officials have not drawn any conclusions regarding a terror plot or any other specific possibility. Home Minister Amit Shah has confirmed that all angles are being thoroughly probed.
Sandeep Kumar, spokesperson for Gurugram Police in Haryana, confirmed that the vehicle was originally registered in the name of local resident Salman. Salman reportedly sold the car about a year and a half ago to Devender, a resident of Okhla (Delhi).
Both Salman and Devender have been handed over to and detained by Delhi Police officials for questioning.
