Family violence targeting seniors in Canada has reached a record level, according to a new report released by Statistics Canada (StatsCan).

The StatsCan report indicates a significant surge in the rate of family violence against seniors nationwide, which has increased by 49% since 2018.

The data highlights that perpetrators are often the victims’ immediate family members.

Last year, senior victims of family violence were most frequently victimized by their own child.

Approximately one in four victims was victimized by a spouse or another family member.

In 2024, there were 7,622 senior victims of police-reported family violence across the country.

Alexandra Lysova, a Criminology Professor at Simon Fraser University, stated that the increase in elder abuse is concerning. While she noted that the overall prevalence of victimization among seniors is lower compared to other age categories, the issue demands serious attention.

Professor Lysova stressed the importance of taking the issue of elder abuse seriously as the overall population of people aged 65 and older continues to grow.
