The Vancouver Police Board is seeking a substantial increase in its budget, having voted in favour of requesting a budget of over $497 million for 2026. This figure represents an increase of $50 million over the interim budget for 2025.

This decision comes just two days before the city’s draft budget is set to be presented to Council, a budget in which Mayor Ken Sim is pushing for a 0% property tax increase.

Police Board member Lorraine Lowe acknowledged that the budget request is likely to face opposition, particularly as other city departments, such as the Park Board, may be confronting budget cuts.

The Board heard that a 4.9% increase in the budget is attributed to external cost increases that are beyond the control of the Vancouver Police Department (VPD). Additionally, the increase is needed to cover anticipated policing costs associated with the FIFA World Cup event scheduled for 2026.
