U.S. President Donald Trump says he has a good relationship with Prime Minister Mark Carney after the two leaders met in person in South Korea on Wednesday.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump said Carney apologized for an Ontario government-funded advertisement that stalled trade talks between the two countries last week.

Trump described the ad as “false” and said negotiations have yet to resume. When asked whether he planned to restart trade discussions with Canada, the president replied, “No, but I have a very good relationship. I like him a lot, but what they did was wrong.”

The advertisement featured a 1987 radio address by former U.S. president Ronald Reagan, in which he said tariffs “hurt every American.” Ontario announced plans to air the $75-million ad campaign on October 14.

At the time, Ontario Premier Doug Ford said, “We’re going to launch a $75-million ad and repeat that message in every Republican district.”

Ten days later, Trump announced he was ending trade talks with Canada after Ford confirmed that the ad would air on U.S. networks during the October 25–26 weekend — coinciding with Games 1 and 2 of the World Series between the Toronto Blue Jays and the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Following that, Trump said he would impose an additional 10 per cent tariff on Canada.

“Canada was caught red-handed putting up a fraudulent advertisement using Ronald Reagan’s speech on tariffs,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

“Because of their serious misrepresentation of the facts and hostile actions, I am increasing the tariff on Canada by 10 per cent, on top of what they are already paying.”
