The Government of British Columbia has declared September 6, 2025, as Jaswant Singh Khalra Day to honor the legacy of the Sikh human rights activist known for exposing mass abductions and killings of Sikhs in Punjab during the 1980s and 1990s.
Signed by Lieutenant Governor Wendy Cocchia, the proclamation recognizes Khalra’s bravery and global impact in bringing attention to human rights abuses.
Khalra, who was invited to Canada in 1995 by the World Sikh Organization (WSO) to share his findings, was abducted and murdered that same year — a date now observed worldwide in his memory.
WSO BC Regional President Gurpreet Kaur called the proclamation a historic recognition of Khalra’s courage and sacrifice, emphasizing the importance of his message of truth and justice.
The WSO continues to advocate for Sikh and human rights, while the proclamation reflects British Columbia’s commitment to justice, truth, and accountability.
