Canada Post has laid off dozens of managers as part of an ongoing restructuring plan and labour dispute, a source told CTV News.

In a memo to staff, Canada Post president and CEO Doug Ettinger said the layoffs are part of broader efforts “to better align our management team with the future needs of the organization,” adding that such decisions are “never taken lightly.”

The company confirmed the layoffs in a statement, calling it a “difficult decision” but declined to specify how many employees were affected. The Toronto Star first reported the development.

Last month, Government Transformation Minister Joel Lightbound announced sweeping reforms to address what he called Canada Post’s “existential” financial crisis, describing the Crown corporation as “effectively insolvent.” The measures include new mail delivery standards, lifting moratoriums on both community mailbox conversions and rural post office closures, and a requirement to cut management and overhead costs by at least 15%.

In response, the postal workers’ union — representing about 55,000 members — launched a nationwide strike, later shifting to rotating strikes on October 9. Both sides are expected to return to negotiations later this week, according to The Canadian Press.

Ettinger said Canada Post must “align costs with financial realities,” adding that the organization will become “leaner at all levels.” He said the company will focus on reducing its workforce through attrition and will maintain an external hiring freeze.

Canada Post said it will present its financial recovery plan to the government in the coming weeks, emphasizing the need for “decisive action” to provide sustainable services. Since 2018, the corporation has lost more than $5 billion and expects to lose another $1.5 billion in 2025.
