Prime Minister Mark Carney briefly addressed escalating trade tensions ahead of his trip to Asia today, responding to U.S. President Donald Trump’s abrupt announcement that he is ending trade talks with Canada.
Speaking to reporters on the tarmac, Carney framed the dispute in terms of control.
“For months, we have stressed the importance of distinguishing things we can control and things we can’t control,” Carney said. “We can’t control the trade policy of the United States.”
He emphasized that his government’s negotiators remain prepared to resume trade discussions with the U.S. once the White House signals it is ready.
“What we can control, absolutely, is how we build here at home,” Carney added, reinforcing the focus of his government’s domestic policy. He did not, however, respond to questions from journalists regarding whether Ontario should retract the controversial anti-tariff advertisement.
Carney’s remarks came hours after President Trump intensified his criticism of the Ontario ad campaign. The ads, which feature the voice of former U.S. President Ronald Reagan speaking about tariffs, cost Ontario millions of dollars to air across multiple American T-V Stations.
Trump accused Canada of attempting to influence an upcoming U.S. Supreme Court ruling on his Global Levies with the ads.
In response to the terminated talks, Ontario Premier Doug Ford made an online post this morning, stating that Canada and the U.S. are friends, neighbours, and allies, and that Reagan knew both nations are stronger together.
