Late last night, U.S. President Donald Trump announced he was immediately terminating all trade negotiations with Canada, citing an anti-tariff ad broadcast to American audiences by the Ontario government that features the voice of former U.S. President Ronald Reagan.
In response Friday morning, Ontario Premier Doug Ford stood firm on the ad, stating, “Reagan knew that we are stronger together.”
On his Truth Social platform, Trump wrote late Thursday: “The Ronald Reagan Foundation has just announced that Canada has fraudulently used an advertisement, which is FAKE, featuring Ronald Reagan speaking negatively about Tariffs.”
Trump continued: “Tariffs are very important to the national security, and economy, of the U.S.A. Based on their egregious behavior, ALL TRADE NEGOTIATIONS WITH CANADA ARE HEREBY TERMINATED.”
In a separate post to X on Thursday, The Ronald Reagan Foundation stated that the ad “misrepresents” a Radio Address on Free and Fair Trade from April 1987, adding that the Ontario government “did not seek nor receive permission to use and edit the remarks.”
However, the advertisement appears to accurately quote Reagan, who was a supporter of Free Trade and delivered the original remarks to explain new duties on Japanese products following Japan’s violation of a trade agreement on Semiconductors.
The ad quotes Reagan as saying: “When someone says let’s impose tariffs on foreign imports, it looks like they’re doing the patriotic thing by protecting American products and jobs.” The ad continues with Reagan’s warning: “High tariffs inevitably lead to retaliation by foreign countries and the triggering of fierce trade wars. Then the worst happens. Markets shrink and collapse, businesses and industry shut down, and millions of people lose their jobs.”
Trump’s sudden termination of talks comes just two weeks after Prime Minister Mark Carney visited the White House, where Trump had directed two senior cabinet members to work toward a deal with Canada on Steel, Aluminum, and Energy.
