The Conservative Party has unveiled its “Conservative Youth Jobs Plan,” with Garnett Genuis, Shadow Minister for Employment, appealing to the Liberal government to adopt the strategy in the upcoming federal budget.
Genuis expressed grave concern over the current situation, stating, “Youth unemployment in Canada is now at crisis levels. Nearly 15 per cent of those aged 15 to 24, which is over 460,000 young Canadians, are unemployed. Excluding the pandemic period, the youth employment rate is at its lowest level in 25 years.”
To address this crisis, the Conservatives introduced a four-point Youth Jobs Plan focusing on:
Opening the Economy: The plan calls for repealing “Anti-resource” legislation, cutting taxes to encourage reinvestment, and eliminating the “red tape” that they claim is preventing homebuilding and business growth.
Fixing Immigration: Arguing that the Liberals have “broken the system” by over-flooding the labour market, the Conservatives propose fixing credential recognition and re-linking immigration levels to the realities of the labour and housing markets.
Fixing Training: The party suggests reforming the Canada Student Financial Assistance Program to provide greater support to students studying in high-demand fields, based on objective labour market data.
Building Homes Where the Jobs Are: Finally, the Conservatives proposed a strategy to prioritize home construction in areas with existing job opportunities.
