Canadian manufacturing sales declined by one per cent in August, settling at $69.4 billion, as production fell in the aerospace and automotive industries, according to Statistics Canada.
The agency reported that manufacturing sales saw a decrease in 12 of the 21 subsectors. The sharpest drops were observed in the transportation equipment subsector, which fell by 5.7 per cent, and the food subsector, which decreased by 1.9 per cent.
The decline in transportation equipment sales brought the total down to $10.7 billion in August. This was primarily due to an 8.6 per cent drop in the manufacturing of aerospace products and parts. Sales of motor vehicle parts also fell by 5.2 per cent, and motor vehicle sales saw a 3.3 per cent decrease.
On a constant dollar basis (reflecting volume changes), manufacturing sales were down by 1.5 per cent in August.
In a separate report, Statistics Canada noted that wholesale sales, excluding petroleum, petroleum products and other hydrocarbons, and oilseed and grain, fell by 1.2 per cent in August to $85.4 billion.
Excluding those commodities, wholesale sales in volume terms also saw a drop of 1.3 per cent in August.
