The Senate is reviewing a bill that would require cancer warning labels on alcohol packaging.

Senator Patrick Brazeau, who introduced the bill, told a Senate committee today that alcohol consumption is associated with seven types of deadly cancer, including liver, colon, breast, and oral cancers. He noted that research indicates only about 25% of Canadians are aware of these risks and that many people still hold misconceptions about alcohol’s safety.

The proposed legislation would also mandate labels showing what qualifies as a standard drink and how many drinks pose potential health risks.

Brazeau said he anticipates strong opposition from the alcohol industry, comparing it to the resistance once faced by tobacco warning labels.

He emphasized that adding warning labels is just the first step, as alcohol use is linked to many other serious health problems.
