Israel and Hamas have agreed to a pause in their devastating two-year war and the release of the remaining hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners. The breakthrough was met on Thursday with joy and relief, though also with caution.

Uncertainty remains regarding some of the thornier aspects of the American peace plan, such as whether and how Hamas will disarm and who will govern Gaza.

However, the sides appear closer than ever to ending a war that has killed thousands of Palestinians and brought famine to parts of Gaza. The conflict, which began with Hamas’ deadly attack on Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, has also triggered other regional conflicts, sparked worldwide protests, and led to allegations of genocide that Israel denies.

Canada Welcomes Deal, Pledges Support
Prime Minister Mark Carney thanked everyone involved in negotiating the first phase of the peace plan, which calls for a pause in fighting between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.

Carney offered his congratulations to U.S. President Donald Trump for orchestrating the deal and thanked Qatar, Egypt, and Turkey for their work to support the talks.

Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand stated that Canada will support all efforts to turn this step into lasting peace for Israelis and Palestinians. She also called for immediate and unimpeded humanitarian aid to be allowed into Gaza.
