A private member’s bill in British Columbia that sought to let parents sue doctors up to 25 years after they provided medical care to transgender children was voted down in the legislature before even reaching its first reading.
According to a summary from the One BC Party, the proposed bill would have also banned doctors from giving puberty blockers to minors, prohibited the use of “wrong pronouns” in schools, and barred public funding for gender transitions.
The motion was defeated 48–40, an unusual outcome for legislation that hadn’t yet advanced past its initial stage.
The One BC Party is led by former B.C. Conservative MLAs Tara Armstrong and Dallas Brodie. During debate, Armstrong claimed that British Columbia was “sleepwalking through the greatest medical scandal in modern history” and said the bill aimed to “restore sanity.”
Conservative Leader John Rustad, who voted in favour of allowing the bill to proceed to first reading, later admitted he wasn’t aware of its full contents but said his party has long discussed “the need to protect women and girls.”
During question period, Attorney General Niki Sharma expressed concern and apologized to trans children and their supportive families listening to the proceedings.
“This is another sad day in the B.C. legislature,” Sharma said. “Conservative politicians are trying to dictate what parents should do and the choices they should make out of love and care for their children — and we’re targeting vulnerable kids.”
She added, “Health decisions for children are a protected right for parents to make in consultation with their doctors, not by governments or politicians.”
