A bail hearing took place Wednesday at Surrey Provincial Court for three men charged in connection with an extensive extortion and firearms investigation that has raised alarm within the South Asian business community.

The accused — Arundeep Singh (26), Nirmaandeep Cheema (20), and Mandeep Singh Gidda (23) — are among seven individuals facing charges after a months-long probe by a provincial task force. All three appeared in court via video link.

Each man faces a charge of reckless discharge of a firearm, tied to incidents police believe are part of a broader pattern of extortion targeting South Asian-owned restaurants and businesses.

Due to a Section 517 publication ban, evidence and details discussed during the hearing cannot be made public until the case concludes.

Investigators allege that business owners were threatened through calls and messages demanding payments and warning that their establishments would be shot at or set on fire if they refused.

The arrests follow a surge in related violence, including four shootings in Surrey last Monday, two of which occurred at branches of the Ustaad G76 restaurant chain, previously targeted in Maple Ridge. Police are still working to determine whether these incidents are connected to a larger extortion network.

Cheema and Gidda are scheduled to return to court on October 15, while Singh is due back on October 23.
