The ongoing strike by British Columbia’s public service workers has escalated, with the union increasing pressure on the government to secure a new contract.
The B.C. General Employees’ Union (BCGEU) announced it has added 48 more work sites to its picket list, bringing an additional 2,600 workers into the strike action.
The expanded job action now includes 18 provincial liquor and cannabis retail stores, as well as approximately 30 B.C. offices dealing with natural resources and land-use permits.
The BCGEU reports that approximately 25,000 public service workers are now participating in the job action out of a total of 34,000 members.
Brief talks were held last week, but the two sides failed to reach an agreement. Workers are demanding higher wages to address the surging cost-of-living, while the government is struggling to find a deal amid significant fiscal constraints.
The province’s deficit is forecasted to be a record $11.6 billion. Finance Minister Brenda Bailey has stated that any agreement must be fair to both the striking workers and the taxpayers.
