As B.C. politicians return to Victoria for the fall session of the legislature, speculation is mounting that BC Conservative leader John Rustad is in the fight of his political life.
The opposition party endured a summer marked by turmoil, including a long, drawn-out leadership review shaped by a fake membership scandal, the firing of Elenore Sturko over allegations she was organizing against him, and increasing criticism of his leadership.
Stewart Prest, a political science lecturer at UBC, suggests that part of the problem stems from the coalition Rustad built before last year’s election.
“These are two different types of conservatives. They came close to winning the election, but they don’t work well together in practice,” Prest said.
Additionally, some longtime party members have publicly criticized Rustad for “widening the net too much” and turning the Conservatives into a “big-tent party.”
According to Prest, at this point, the question of Rustad’s eventual resignation is one of “when” and not “if.”
