An international student from India has been sentenced to 11 years in prison after pleading guilty in Saskatoon provincial court to charges of drug trafficking and possessing the proceeds of crime.

According to the written decision by Saskatoon provincial court Judge Lisa Watson, 27-year-old Jatinderpal Singh began selling drugs in Saskatchewan to pay off his debts. Singh had initially come to Canada to study at a university in Ontario, but his student visa expired after he was unable to afford the school fees.

Facts presented in court showed that Singh contacted a trafficking group via the Signal app, following a suggestion from a friend, to make money selling drugs. In July 2024, they sent him to Saskatoon and directed him to sell drugs including cocaine, methamphetamine, and fentanyl.

Singh sold drugs for approximately four weeks before being arrested by Saskatoon police who were surveilling him at his hotel. Police seized more than half a kilogram of cocaine, over five kilograms of methamphetamine, and more than two kilograms of fentanyl. They also found $77,546 in cash.

Evidence submitted during the sentencing highlighted the drug toxicity crisis in the province, noting that accidental overdoses in Saskatchewan increased from 92 in 2016 to 416 in 2023, with fentanyl being the main driver of the increase in deaths.

Judge Watson sentenced Jatinderpal Singh to 11 years in prison. After receiving credit for his time spent on remand, he has nine and a half years left to serve.
