A man from Ontario has been sentenced to 12 years in prison reduced to about 9.5 years after credit for time served in connection with a deadly shooting in Surrey that took place in February 2022.

26-year-old Yusuf Kontos, originally from Richmond Hill, Ontario, pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the killing of Juvraj Jabal, a man known to police for gang-related activity. Kontos also received an eight-year concurrent sentence for the aggravated assault of Jabal’s then-girlfriend, who was also shot but survived.

The incident happened on Feb. 8, 2022, near 170A Street in the Fraser Heights area. According to court documents, Kontos had been spending the evening with Jabal and his 20-year-old girlfriend, Jasmine Lindstrom, using drugs together before the situation took a violent turn.

Just before midnight, while riding in a rental car driven by Lindstrom, Kontos fatally shot Jabal in the head. Moments later, he shot Lindstrom in the face as she attempted to flee the scene. Despite her serious injuries, she survived but continues to deal with long-term physical and psychological effects, including jaw pain, facial numbness, and hearing loss.

After the shooting, Kontos took Lindstrom’s phone to prevent her from calling for help and disposed of both the firearm a .45 calibre Glock and the phone. The gun was later recovered under a tree near Bothwell Elementary School.

Authorities tracked Kontos down nearly two years later, arresting him in January 2024 in Ontario. He had originally faced charges of first-degree murder and attempted murder, but those were downgraded as part of a guilty plea agreement.

Sgt. Freda Fong of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) acknowledged the collaborative effort between B.C. and Ontario police that led to the arrest. “This was a cross-province investigation that required persistence and strong cooperation. We hope the outcome brings some closure to the families affected,” Fong said in a statement.

At the time of his death, 24-year-old Juvraj Jabal had a well-documented history with law enforcement. He had previous convictions related to drug trafficking and was known to be associated with the Brothers Keepers gang. In past incidents, including one in 2015, he was found in possession of large quantities of cash, drugs, and an illegal firearm.

The court proceedings concluded last week at the New Westminster Law Courts, with Justice Heather Holmes overseeing the sentencing.
