An Alberta infant, born prematurely after the mother contracted measles during pregnancy, has died, officials confirmed Thursday.

The announcement first appeared on the province’s online measles dashboard. In a statement, Health Minister Adriana LaGrange expressed her sorrow, saying she had hoped this day would never come.

“This is Alberta’s first measles-related death. The child, born prematurely after the mother was infected during pregnancy, passed away shortly after birth,” LaGrange said.

Experts warn that children under five, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems face the greatest risk from measles. Contracting the virus during pregnancy can cause serious complications such as miscarriage, premature birth, stillbirth, or congenital infection. Health officials advise that anyone planning a pregnancy should confirm they have received two doses of a measles-containing vaccine before conception, since vaccination is not recommended during pregnancy.

LaGrange did not reveal where in Alberta the patients lived.

This death comes as Alberta reports 1,910 measles cases. According to Canada’s national monitoring data, it marks the country’s second measles-related death so far this year.
