Federal Green Party Leader Elizabeth May passed her latest leadership review with just over 80 per cent support, according to results announced by the party yesterday.
The party has not released any figures on voter turnout, leaving it unclear how many members participated in the vote.
The review took place amidst a public challenge to her leadership. In August, a group of Green Party members launched a campaign called “Campaign for GPC Renewal” and penned an open letter urging fellow members to vote against May in the review.
The open letter stressed the importance of “renewal” and stated it was time for May to “open the way for others to lead.”
May has served as leader of the Green Party for a total of 16 years since she first assumed the role in 2006. The recent push for her resignation follows the fact that May had previously resigned the leadership in 2019. However, she was elected back into the position in 2022 following the resignation of her successor, Annamie Paul.
