The Surrey City Council officially recognized local veterinarian and author Dr Hakam Bhullar at Surrey City Hall on Monday presenting him with a Certificate of Recognition for his memoir, The Underdog: A Veterinarian’s Fight Against Racism and Injustice.

In her opening remarks before the Council meeting, Surrey mayor Brenda Locke introduced Dr Bhullar and his book. “Dr Bhullar didn’t just fight for himself. He was fighting for his inner Canadian veterinarian colleagues and his patients, both human and cats. He fought for the right to afford to have care for cats and his clinic was given a number of reports including the best veterinary clinic,” she said.

The Certificate of Recognition, presented by mayor Locke, formally recognized Dr Bhullar’s dedication. “City Council is honoured to present this certificate in recognition of your story—The Underdog. In appreciation of your unwavering commitment to fight for justice for yourself, other Veterinarians and your animal patients. Your leadership and dedication to the fight against racism and injustice has inspired and transformed many lives.” the certificate reads.

The Underdog details the personal and professional struggles of Dr Bhullar to combat systemic racism and advocate for fair treatment in the veterinary profession and the community.

Dr Bhullar said, “I extend my heartfelt thanks to mayor Brenda Locke and the Surrey City Council for recognizing my book at Surrey City Hall.”

He underscored that the Council’s support helps elevate the critical subject matter. “Your acknowledgment not only honors my work but also brings vital attention to the ongoing fight against racism and injustice,” he stated, adding his gratitude for the city’s commitment to an inclusive and equitable community.
