The British Columbia government’s push to increase housing construction has sparked “chaos” in communities, prompting a coalition of groups to call for a permanent expert roundtable to guide provincial housing policy.

The coalition—including the BC Real Estate Association, the Aboriginal Housing Management Association, Canadian mortgage brokers, local politicians, and developers—says such a roundtable is needed to develop more effective housing strategies.

Port Coquitlam Mayor Brad West criticized Premier David Eby’s government, saying it “opened the floodgates with an avalanche of new legislation” to build more homes, but that it has also caused “a lot of chaos.”

B.C.’s legislation sets targets for communities to increase housing and requires local governments to adjust zoning rules to permit small multi-unit homes on lots previously zoned for single-family residences. West called this policy of allowing multiple homes on single-family lots “incredibly problematic” for both builders and neighborhoods not designed for higher density.

The groups argue that the roundtable would bring housing experts together with municipal and provincial officials to craft solutions that better reflect community needs.

At the Union of B.C. Municipalities convention on Friday, delegates passed a resolution calling for the creation of a permanent provincial housing policy roundtable.
