Former senator and Vancouver mayor Larry Campbell has been named British Columbia’s new lead for improving the quality of life in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside (DTES).
Campbell, who was mayor from 2002 to 2005 and served in the Senate until 2023, stated that he will draw on his experience and connections to enhance housing and support for unhoused residents, with a focus on women, Indigenous people, and those facing complex mental health and addiction challenges.
He succeeds Michael Bryant, whose contract was terminated in May 2025 amid concerns about transparency and the cost of his appointment.
The DTES faces ongoing challenges with crime, poverty, and addiction, but Housing Minister Christine Boyle emphasized that the government is committed to achieving better outcomes for the community.
Campbell’s contract runs until March 2026. He said collaborating with local groups will help advance the “unique and incredibly resourceful” neighbourhood in a “focused, compassionate, and effective way.”
The provincial government outlined that Campbell’s role will include coordinating and promoting improvements in public spaces, infrastructure, health care, housing, and economic development in the DTES.
