Hopes for a quick resolution to the ongoing postal strike faded Friday afternoon after Canada Post announced it is postponing the release of its latest contract proposal to 55,000 employees.
The corporation had planned to submit a new offer to the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) on Friday to restart stalled negotiations. Instead, it now says the proposal will be revised in response to federal reforms announced this week.
Ottawa has directed Canada Post to phase out home delivery and close certain rural outlets as part of a plan to stabilize its finances, with projected losses of $1.5 billion in 2025.
Canada Post says it remains committed to negotiating a deal with CUPW but stresses that any agreement must be affordable, support employees, and ensure the company’s long-term sustainability. A revised offer will be presented “as soon as possible.”
In a statement, CUPW condemned Ottawa’s reforms as an attack on the public postal service and unionized jobs. The union confirmed that Canada Post will decide Monday whether a new proposal will be tabled later in the week.
Labour Minister Patty Hajdu urged both sides to continue negotiations. CUPW has previously rejected Canada Post’s 13 per cent wage increase, demanding 19 per cent instead, and has warned that time is running out to reach a deal before the busy holiday season.
