Surrey Fire Services’ regional 9-1-1 dispatch centre has become the first in British Columbia to adopt Next Generation 9-1-1 (NG9-1-1), a major upgrade to Canada’s emergency communications system.

“Surrey is proud to be leading the way in modernizing emergency communications,” said Mayor Brenda Locke. “This move to NG9-1-1 demonstrates our commitment to innovation and public safety, ensuring residents and communities across B.C. receive the fastest and most reliable emergency response possible.”

The upgrade, completed on September 24, replaces older systems with a faster, more reliable IP-based network. It also lays the foundation for future capabilities such as text, video, and data sharing.

“This milestone marks a new chapter in emergency communications and reinforces Surrey’s dedication to public safety,” said Fire Chief Jason Cairney. “It gives first responders better tools and information for handling critical incidents.”

The transition was led by Surrey Fire Services with support from a provincial grant through the Union of BC Municipalities. Surrey’s dispatch centre handles emergency calls for over 50 fire departments across the province.
