Coquitlam RCMP is warning the public about “spoofing scams” after receiving multiple reports that the phone number for the Coquitlam RCMP Burquitlam Community Police Office (604-949-5000) has been used for fraudulent calls.
In a statement, police explained that “spoofing” is a type of fraud where scammers manipulate their caller ID to display “Coquitlam RCMP” or the name of another police agency. The fraudsters pretend to be police officers and tell potential victims they are under investigation for a criminal offense. They then try to get personal or financial information from the victim.
Media Relations Officer Acting Sergeant George Han said, “Scammers are pretending to be police officers to scare people into giving up personal information.” He advised, “If you ever get a call that doesn’t feel right, even if it looks like it’s coming from the police, just hang up and call the Coquitlam RCMP directly at 604-945-1550.”
