Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre says he fears for his family’s safety as concerns about political violence grow in both Canada and the United States, following the fatal shooting of American right-wing activist Charlie Kirk. He argues that all of Canada’s senior politicians should be afforded protection.

“We have faced very serious threats, to the point where the RCMP determined that my family and I required protection for an extended period,” Poilievre said in an interview with CBC’s The House.

He stressed that political leaders and ministers deemed at risk by the RCMP should be granted security to prevent similar incidents in Canada. Speaking with host Catherine Cullen, Poilievre added that most political leaders would likely agree the threat is real and steps must be taken to reduce it.

Poilievre described Kirk as having been killed “because he expressed a contrary point of view” and said targeting people for their opinions has no place in a democracy.

“Disagreement and debate are essential in a free and open democracy,” he said. “We cannot let the terrorist who carried out this assassination change that.”
