Toronto police say a 16-year-old has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder in the death of eight-year-old JahVai Roy, who was struck by a stray bullet while lying in bed at his North York home last month.
The arrest was announced Wednesday morning during a news conference at police headquarters.
Roy was shot inside his apartment on Martha Eaton Way, near Trethewey Drive, around 12:30 a.m. on Aug. 16. He was rushed to hospital but later died. His mother previously told CTV News she had been lying beside him when the bullet struck.
On Sept. 5, investigators confirmed the arrest of a 16-year-old suspect, who was 15 at the time of the shooting. He faces one count of first-degree murder and five firearm-related charges. Police said they also recovered a loaded gun during the arrest.
Two additional suspects remain at large. Canada-wide warrants have been issued for 17-year-old Ibrahim Ibrahim and 18-year-old Amarii Lindner, who was 17 at the time of the shooting.
Although the Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA) normally shields the identities of underage suspects, police said they obtained judicial authorization to publicly name them due to the gravity of the case.
