Collision  between freight train and a car killed 1 in Maple Ridge

A person was killed Wednesday morning when their vehicle was hit by a freight train at a controlled crossing in Maple Ridge, B.C. 

According to Ridge Meadows RCMP, officers responded around 9:40 a.m. to reports of a serious collision on the 25800 block of Lougheed Highway. Police confirmed one person in the vehicle died but did not release any details about the victim or the vehicle. 

Firefighters and paramedics were already on scene when police arrived. The area was temporarily closed while RCMP collision analysts investigated. It is unclear whether the railway crossing gates were active at the time of the crash. 

“This is currently an active and ongoing investigation, and no further information is available at this time,” police said. 

B.C. Emergency Health Services reported that paramedics were called to the scene at 9:36 a.m., with one ambulance carrying primary care paramedics and another with advanced care paramedics. No patients were transported to hospital, the agency said. 

Investigators are asking witnesses or anyone with dash-cam or surveillance footage from the area to contact police.
