The Canadian government is backing an UN-supported finding that famine is occurring in Gaza and is urging Israel to halt its escalating campaign in the Palestinian territory.

The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification, the global standard for measuring hunger, found on Friday that famine is present in parts of Gaza and is likely to spread. Israel has rejected these claims, noting that it has allowed an increase in aid trucks to enter the territory following immense global pressure. However, aid groups maintain that what is being allowed in is still insufficient.

Canada’s Secretary of State for International Development, Randeep Sarai, stated that Ottawa is “deeply alarmed by the horrific deteriorating conditions in Gaza.” He added that Israel is “failing” to fulfill its obligations under international law.

The Conservative Party has not directly responded to the finding of famine, though its members of parliament have repeatedly stated that Hamas is responsible for the plight of Palestinians.
