Richmond RCMP are urging residents to stay alert for rental deposit scams after receiving five reports in less than two months.
A news release on Friday stated that these cases have been reported since early July, with losses ranging from $400 to $2,600 per victim.
Police explained that in most cases, victims saw rental listings on social media, contacted the alleged landlord, and were asked to pay a deposit via e-transfer to secure the property. After sending the money, they discovered the properties were not actually available for rent.
“We know the rental market is highly competitive, especially at this time of year,” said Cpl. Denise Kam of the Richmond RCMP Economic Crime Unit. “Scammers often prey on people’s emotions to create a sense of urgency. We advise the public to verify ownership before paying any rental or damage deposits.”
The RCMP also offered safety tips for renters, including checking listings on multiple platforms, using reverse image searches to detect reused photos, confirming property ownership or management, and never sending money before viewing a property in person.
Police added that anyone who suspects they have been scammed should immediately report it to their local police.
