Police in Fort St. John are warning the public about a new cryptocurrency scam targeting employees.

The alert follows an incident in which a store worker lost $900 after being tricked by someone impersonating their boss.

According to Fort St. John RCMP, the scammer claimed the money was needed to cover the delivery of a business package and persuaded the employee to deposit the funds into a Bitcoin ATM on July 31.

By the time the employee realized the call was fake, the money had already been converted into Bitcoin and transferred to the fraudster’s crypto wallet.

“Legitimate businesses will not ask you to pay for items or services using cryptocurrencies,” said Const. Christiaan Dreyer.

“Once funds are converted to Bitcoin and sent to a fraudster’s wallet, the likelihood of tracing or recovering the money is extremely low,” he added.

Police noted there have been “several similar incidents” in the area in recent months.

They advise anyone contacted by someone claiming to be their boss or a coworker—and who feels something is off—to hang up and verify the request by calling a manager using a trusted phone number.
