Prime Minister Mark Carney has condemned what he called a “reprehensible” attack on a Muslim woman in Ottawa earlier this week.
According to OC Transpo, special constables and Ottawa police responded to a bus near March Road and Teron Road just before 5 p.m. on Monday after receiving reports that a man had assaulted a woman wearing a hijab.

Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe also denounced the incident.
Sutcliffe shared details on social media, stating that the attack involved “Islamophobic slurs and threats.”
“I strongly condemn this act of violence and hatred; it has no place in our community. Everyone should feel safe while travelling on public transit or anywhere in Ottawa,” he wrote.

The Kanata Muslim Association issued a safety alert on Facebook, stating that on August 11, a young hijabi woman was physically attacked on a bus to Kanata (Morgan’s Grant area). The post said the man boarded the bus, whispered an Islamophobic slur, then slapped her loudly without provocation. He allegedly threatened to slam her face into the window and kill her before leaving at Penfield Drive in Kanata.
The association added that another passenger reported the same man had previously targeted hijabi women. It urged visible minorities—particularly women wearing hijabs—to remain alert on public transit in the Kanata area and to report any harassment or assault to police immediately.
The Ottawa Police Service confirmed it is investigating the assault, which targeted a Muslim woman in her late teens, and is searching for a suspect described as a White, English-speaking man in his 20s or 30s, around 5-foot-8, with a thin build and beard. Police say the suspect is not known to the victim.
OC Transpo advises anyone who feels unsafe or uncomfortable while using public transit to approach a special constable or employee, call 613-741-2478, or dial 911 in an emergency. Yellow emergency phones are also located throughout the transit system.
