Vancouver International Airport (YVR) is warning air travelers about potential Air Canada flight cancellations and disruptions this weekend as the airline and its flight attendants’ union prepare for a possible multi-day strike.
Air Canada announced it will begin halting flights on Friday to allow for an orderly shutdown of operations before a full work stoppage could begin on Saturday. YVR confirmed in a statement that both a 72-hour strike notice from the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) and a 72-hour lock-out notice from Air Canada have been served as part of the contract negotiations.
The airline indicated that service could be affected as early as Thursday, with disruptions potentially beginning at 9:58 p.m. on Friday. YVR stated that while it continues to “urge both parties to reach an agreement at the table,” it is preparing for potential impacts, including increasing terminal staff to assist affected passengers.
CUPE served its first strike notice early Wednesday morning after the two sides failed to reach an agreement on a new collective bargaining contract. In a statement on its website, Air Canada said, “Despite eight months of good faith negotiations that included the assistance of federal conciliators, and an offer to enter binding arbitration, Air Canada has been unable to reach a tentative agreement with the union.”
