Construction is set to begin on new classrooms at three Burnaby schools, creating more than 1,000 new student spaces to meet the needs of the growing community.

MLA for Burnaby North, Janet Routledge, emphasized the importance of the projects, stating, “These types of projects help ensure that families have access to the services and opportunities they deserve.”

The projects, scheduled to begin in summer 2025, include:

A new Conseil scolaire francophone (CSF) elementary school in north Burnaby, adding 360 seats and 15 classrooms.

An addition to Kitchener Elementary in the Burnaby Heights neighbourhood, adding 500 seats and 20 classrooms.

An addition and seismic upgrades to Brentwood Park Elementary, adding 165 seats and seven classrooms.

This new CSF elementary school will be the first of its kind in Burnaby, marking a significant milestone for French-language education in the area. It will also include 112 French-language child care spaces. Additionally, Brentwood Park Elementary will add before- and after-school child care to support working parents.

Infrastructure Minister Bowinn Ma noted that these projects will “create the space our community needs now and for years to come.”

According to Kristin Schnider, chair of the Burnaby board of education, this investment will help address enrolment pressures and create better learning environments for students and staff.

Over the past eight years, the Province has approved more than $375 million to create new student seats and seismically safer seats in the Burnaby School District.
