In an effort to create more homes in Vancouver, five industrial sites are being reviewed for potential rezoning to residential sites. These locations include the former Molson site and industrial areas near Main Street and Terminal Avenue, Railtown, Marine Gateway, and Mount Pleasant. All these sites are part of Metro Vancouver’s industrial land reserve.

According to the Metro Vancouver Board, industrial lands make up only four percent of the region’s total land base but account for over 25 percent of the region’s employment. These lands also play a crucial role in the region’s economic prosperity through their connections to transportation, trade, and tax revenue.

Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim stated, “We are in the 21st century and we need more housing, but we also need to rethink how we use industrial land because we are going through what you could call a new industrial revolution.”

City staff have been tasked with reporting back to council on this matter by the end of October.
