A children’s play kitchen sold in both Canada and the United States is being recalled after the tragic death of a 23-month-old child in Oregon. The toddler reportedly became entangled on one of the kitchen’s metal hooks and died from strangulation.

The recall affects the KidKraft Farm to Table Model Play Kitchen, model number 53411.

According to Health Canada, no injuries have been reported in Canada. However, in the U.S., the company received one report of a child’s clothing getting caught on a metal hook while the child was crawling through the rear opening of the kitchen unit, where toy accessories are stored. The child became trapped and was unable to free himself, resulting in death due to strangulation and asphyxiation. The unit had not been secured to a wall, creating a gap that allowed the child to climb behind it and become entangled.

No other incidents have been reported in the U.S.

Health Canada states that approximately 192,000 units were sold in the United States, and just under 5,800 units in Canada. The play kitchens were originally imported by KidKraft, Inc. between 2018 and 2023, and distributed until May 2024.

Following KidKraft, Inc.’s bankruptcy, Backyard Kids purchased 2,900 remaining units in June 2024 and continued selling them under the KidKraft brand. Of those, about 400 were sold to retailers and consumers in the U.S. Backyard Kids sold only 12 units in Canada, with the rest of the Canadian sales attributed to KidKraft, Inc.

Backyard Kids will offer replacement hooks to all U.S. customers and to Canadian consumers and retailers who bought the units specifically from Backyard Kids.

Health Canada urges consumers to stop using the recalled play kitchens immediately and to contact Backyard Kids for a replacement hook. They also emphasize that the kitchens should always be securely anchored to a wall using the original or a replacement tip-over prevention kit, which the company will provide upon request.
