The number of active wildfires in British Columbia continues to spike following high temperatures and lightning strikes this week, with approximately 120 blazes now burning across the province.

The BC Wildfire Service reports that half of the active fires started in the last 24 hours, while 16 fires were successfully put out during the same period.

According to the wildfire service, the Cariboo Fire Centre region in central B.C. experienced over 1,200 lightning strikes on Wednesday, which ignited 13 new fires in the area.

One fire in the B.C. Interior, now over 12 square kilometers in size, is burning 10 kilometers south of Lytton, B.C., where an evacuation order for the Lytton First Nation remains in place.

The wildfire service says the blaze is highly visible from Highway 1, and motorists are urged to use extra caution and be aware of their surroundings while passing through the area.

Officials noted that heat warnings have ended for most of the province and there’s a small chance of isolated showers. However, dry conditions mean that fuels on the ground remain highly susceptible to ignition.

Evacuation orders are also still in effect for homes near Peachland in the Okanagan and near Cameron Lake on Vancouver Island.
