Canadian consumers are being advised not to consume a cheese product that may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes bacteria.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has expanded its recall of Mount Becher Buffalo Medium Cheese to include various sizes sold in British Columbia under batch number 854 179. An earlier recall, issued on June 24, involved a 150-gram package distributed in Ontario with a best-before date of October 2, 2025, and batch number 854 263.

“Do not eat, use, sell, serve, or distribute the recalled product,” the CFIA emphasized in its latest online notice posted Monday.

Consumers are advised to either discard the affected cheese or return it to the place of purchase. While listeria infections are rare, they can be very serious, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

What level of risk does the recall pose?

The updated recall has been classified as a Class 1 recall by the CFIA, indicating the highest risk level, which may result in severe health consequences or even death. The agency urges anyone who feels ill after consuming the cheese to seek medical attention.

Guidance for consumers

Consumers who become ill from eating the cheese must see their health-care provider. Symptoms of listeria infection include nausea, vomiting, persistent fever, muscle aches, intense headaches, and stiff neck. Those most vulnerable are pregnant women, seniors, and people with weakened immune systems.

“Although pregnant individuals may only show mild, flu-like symptoms, the infection can cause premature birth, infection in the newborn, or stillbirth,” the CFIA noted. “In severe cases, the illness can be fatal.”
