Agencies are issuing warnings about summer water safety after nearly 100 accidental drownings in British Columbia last year, with the majority of victims being BC residents.
A new report released by the BC Coroners Service states that there were 98 accidental drownings in 2024, with 52 of those recorded between June and September.
Dr. Jatinder Baidwan, chief coroner with the BC Coroners Service, emphasized that this report highlights an “unfortunate upward trend” in accidental drownings during the warm summer months.
The report indicates that data shows most deaths occurred in rivers and creeks, followed by lakes and ponds. Notably, 34 percent of all accidental drownings happened in the Interior Health region.
