The man accused of hijacking a plane and causing a security scare at Vancouver International Airport last week is now facing a second charge related to the incident.
According to B.C. online court records, Shaheer Cassim, 39, was charged Friday with damaging or interfering with a navigation system. This adds to the initial charge of hijacking announced the day after the flight.
Cassim was arrested on July 15 after allegedly threatening a flight instructor at Victoria International Airport, seizing control of a Cessna aircraft, and then circling Vancouver’s airport before landing and being taken into custody by police.
Police have stated that Cassim had an “ideological motive to disrupt airspace.” Both the hijacking charge and the new navigation system interference charge carry a maximum sentence of life in prison.
Cassim is expected to appear in provincial court in Richmond today.
