Police announced on Wednesday the arrest of a Canada-based NRI in connection with the hit-and-run case that resulted in the death of 114-year-old marathon runner Fauja Singh in Jalandhar on July 14.

Amritpal Singh Dhillon, 26, was taken into custody from his home in Kartarpur on Tuesday night. Authorities confirmed that Dhillon had traveled to Canada on a tourist visa three years ago, later securing a work permit valid until 2027. He obtained an international driving license there and was on a brief visit to India, having arrived on June 23. The accident occurred as he was returning to his village from Bhogpur.

According to officials, Dhillon informed police that he was driving at a high speed on the highway when Fauja Singh suddenly appeared in front of his SUV, and he failed to apply the brakes. Instead of stopping to help the victim, he panicked and fled, reaching his village by taking an alternate route to avoid highway CCTV cameras.
