The BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) reported 69 active wildfires across British Columbia as of Monday evening at 6 p.m. These ongoing fires are expected to bring smokier conditions to parts of the province.

The BCWS is urging residents in areas with high smoke concentration to stay indoors or wear a respirator mask when outside. According to firesmoke.ca, some parts of the Lower Mainland could see PM2.5 concentrations up to 120. PM2.5 refers to fine particulate matter 2.5 microns or smaller in diameter, a significant outdoor air pollutant.

While the majority of the active fires are either under control or being held—meaning they’re not expected to grow beyond their current perimeters—15 fires remain out of control. These uncontrolled blazes have led to four evacuation alerts and four evacuation orders, indicating a potential for further growth and risk to communities.
