BC Highway Patrol has arrested a suspect driver who allegedly fled the scene of a horrific head-on collision near Armstrong that claimed the lives of two men. Police are now appealing for additional witnesses and dash-camera video to piece together the exact circumstances of the tragedy.
The fatal crash occurred on July 12, at approximately 1:30 a.m., when two full-size pickup trucks – a black GMC Sierra and a tan Chevrolet – collided head-on near Spallumcheen on Highway #97A.
The tan Chevrolet was occupied by four individuals. Tragically, two passengers, a 19-year-old man from Vernon and a 20-year-old man from Coldstream, died as a result of the collision.
The driver of the black GMC Sierra and a passenger reportedly left the scene on foot without identifying themselves to witnesses or police. Later that same day, a 30-year-old Armstrong man, believed to be the suspect driver, was arrested in connection with the crash.
“Witness reports indicate that a 2009 GMC Sierra with lifted suspension and a tidy tank in the bed was driving the wrong way on the divided highway prior to the fatal collision,” stated Corporal Michael McLaughlin with BC Highway Patrol. “There may be people who had a near-miss with the black GMC Sierra who have not yet spoken to police. We need to speak to those people, and dash-camera video would be very useful.”
Authorities are urging anyone with information, or who may have been in the area at the time of the collision and has dash-camera footage, to come forward and assist with the ongoing investigation.
