A Surrey high school English teacher, Hussan Ali Riasat, has been formally disciplined by the British Columbia Commissioner for Teacher Regulation after being found to have used inappropriate language and disclosed sensitive information about a student’s self-harming behavior to others.

According to a government report, Riasat—who taught at an unnamed Surrey high school—told two students in May 2021 that another student was engaging in self-harm. He also reportedly messaged a student about their “insanely childish and rude” behavior and described another student as having a “bitchy attitude.”

Riasat also administered the Instagram account for the school’s film club and allegedly blocked five students from accessing it. In response to these actions, the school district issued a disciplinary letter on October 5, 2023, suspending him for five days without pay and requiring him to complete a course on professional boundaries.

The situation escalated further when, on May 21, 2024, Riasat reportedly swore at a student in the hallway, saying “F–k you, bitch,” and made obscene gestures toward other students. This followed a previous incident in July 2023, when he received a letter of direction for flicking part of a lanyard at students, striking one in the face or chin.

Riasat resigned from the district on June 17, 2024, with his resignation taking effect two days later. He later entered into a consent agreement under Section 53 of the Teachers Act, acknowledging that his actions amounted to professional misconduct. As part of the agreement, his teaching certificate was suspended for two days.

The agreement also warned that any future breaches could result in separate disciplinary action.
