Amid targeted attacks on South Asian community in Canada, an unidentified person opened fire at the restaurant recently launched by famous comedian Kapil Sharma in Surrey, British Columbia, on Thursday with multiple bullets striking the café and neighbouring buildings. No injuries were reported in the incident.
Kap’s Café, owned by Sharma, opened last week in the heart of Surrey and had quickly become a popular spot for the South Asian community living in Metro Vancouver.
The Surrey Police Service (SPS) stated in a release that officers are investigating a shots fired incident at a business in the Newton neighborhood. Authorities reported that around 1:50 AM, SPS received a report of shots fired at a business located in the 8400 block of 120 Street.
“Upon arrival, officers quickly determined that shots had been fired towards the business, causing property damage, while staff members were still inside. Fortunately, no one at the business was injured. SPS officers gathered evidence and canvassed the area for witnesses and surveillance video,” SPS said.
The Surrey Police Service Frontline Investigative Support (FLIS) Team has taken over the investigation. Authorities say the investigation is ongoing, and connections to other incidents and potential motives are being examined. Currently, no suspect information is available for release.
A video uploaded on social media reportedly shows an unidentified individual firing at least nine shots at the restaurant.
Responsibility for the shooting has been claimed by Harjit Singh Laddi, an individual allegedly associated with the Babbar Khalsa International (BKI). In a social media post, Laddi allegedly stated that the attack was carried out in anger over remarks purportedly made by Kapil Sharma. However, this claim has not yet been officially confirmed. Laddi is reportedly on the National Investigation Agency (NIA) of India’s most wanted list.
