A 42-year-old man has been charged with multiple offences after Metro Vancouver Transit Police found him carrying a loaded handgun at a busy SkyTrain station over the weekend.

Michael James Smith, described by police as having “no fixed address,” was arrested around 2 p.m. Sunday during a routine fare check at Main Street–Science World Station.

According to a police news release issued Tuesday, officers asked Smith for proof of fare payment and discovered he had several outstanding warrants. A search revealed he was carrying a loaded Glock 23 handgun, ammunition, and suspected controlled substances.

Smith remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in Vancouver provincial court on Thursday.

Court records show Smith is facing charges including assault with a weapon and three counts of breaching a release order, stemming from incidents in Delta earlier this year. Those charges are classified as a “K” file, typically used for cases involving alleged intimate partner violence.

Additionally, Smith has been charged with breaching a probation order linked to that K file, with Sunday’s incident listed as the date of the new breach.

He also faces charges related to possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm, carrying a concealed weapon, possessing a firearm in violation of a court order, and breaching another release order—all connected to Sunday’s arrest.

Commenting on the incident, Sgt. Dustin Szakacs said that routine actions like fare checks can sometimes help identify and apprehend individuals who pose a threat to public safety.
