Police in New Westminster are searching for a suspect accused of assaulting and robbing a Facebook Marketplace seller. According to the police, the victim met the suspect at Columbia Square on Monday afternoon to sell an iPhone.
“The victim reported chasing a man who gave him counterfeit bills,” the New Westminster Police Department said in a Tuesday news release. “The suspect then pepper-sprayed the victim before fleeing the scene in a white Tesla with an unknown driver.”
Authorities are asking anyone who witnessed the incident or can identify the suspect to come forward. The suspect is described as a white male, approximately 18 to 20 years old, with short brown hair, about 5’5” tall, and weighing around 120 pounds.
“Theft and assault are serious offenses, and our officers are pursuing multiple investigative leads to identify the suspect,” said Sgt. Andrew Leaver. “We encourage anyone with CCTV footage from the area to review it and contact the police if they have relevant recordings.”
The NWPD also reminded the public that selling items to strangers through online platforms like Facebook Marketplace carries risks and advised that transactions can safely be conducted in the police department’s lobby.
